One small step at a time, we can be the change we wish to see in this world.
“We but mirror the world. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. We need not wait to see what others do.”
― Mahatma Gandhi
At the Tom Gross Team, we believe everyone has the ability to be the change they want to see in the world. We are passionate about keeping our homes and the world we live in clean and healthy and we want to share our passion with our clients and friends.
Below are five easy ways that you can make changes towards a healthier home.
1. Switch from plastic containers to glass.
Throw those plastic containers in your recycle bin!
2. Replace your non-stick pans.
This takes a bit more of an investment, but worth it if you cook a lot. Many nonstick pans contain trace amounts toxic fumes which have been shown to cause flu-like symptoms as well as other medical conditions. The pans’ non-stick lining can scratch or chip off into your food. Instead, use cast iron or stainless steel cookware and natural, non-stick sprays such as olive oil.
3. Switch out your chemical cleaning products!
According to RealSimple.com natural products like baking soda, Borax, soap powder, vinegar, lemon and hot water work just as well as branded cleaning supplies and can help you live a healthy lifestyle. If you don’t have the time to make your own, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a great way to find which environmentally healthy cleaning brands will work best for you. A simple idea would be as you run out of one item, commit to replacing it with a natural cleaning solution.
4. Put your cosmetics and toiletries to the test!
Your skin is your body’s largest organ. You care about what you put in your body, but how about what you put ON your body? Did you know that there are over 10,000 chemicals used in the cosmetics industry and 90% of those have never been assessed for their impact on long term health? Check out the Environmental Working Group’s site to find out about how your current makeup and toiletries rate, as well as help you find safer products.
EWG even have a great mobile app called Skin Deep that you can download to your phone making it easier to scan products in the store and make informed decisions on the spot.
5. Think green when it’s time to replace furnishings.
Medical Daily reported there are 9 toxic chemicals that can be found in furniture. Some companies are now offering environmentally responsible, less toxic furniture, and we hope that more join them! For additional ideas on safe mattresses, sofas and more, check out Gimme The Good Stuff.
